The Artists of the Alpine Club
Peter Mallilieu

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Alpine Club, Peter Mallileu, the Alpine Club's Keeper of Pictures, has compiled this wonderfully illustrated history of the artists of the Alpine Club.

In the 150 years since its foundation in 1857 there have always been members of the Alpine Club who have carried sketch books into the mountains, keeping a record of their endeavours and the peaks they have climbed. This book sets out to show something of the history behind the collection with illustrations of more than 100 pictures.

The present collection of the Alpine Club numbers some 600 pictures. Biographical details of 100 or so artists are provided and accompanied by illustrations. A further 100 or more artists are mentioned in the appendices, including those of the Ladies Alpine Club (merged with the club in 1975).

Featured are such excellent Alpinists as Edward Theodore Compton and the Frenchman Gabril Loppé, alongside such Academicians as Sir Alfred East, Alfred Parsons, Edward Cooke, Charles Ricketts and William Pars.

John Ruskin was made an honorary member of the Alpine Club. We are fortunate to have seven of his fine watercolours in the collection. Edward Whymper, probably the leading Alpinist/Artist of his day is well-represented, together with Everest pioneers Edward Norton and Howard Somervell. Living mountain artists (there are some 16 or so currently) include Julian Cooper. Hamish Fulton, George Rowlett, Rob Piercy, Simon Pierse and Rowan Huntley.

This book will provide an invaluable source for archivists. It is Landscape in format with 232 pages. It contains high-quality colour printing and is a sewn and cased book with a dust jacket.

Proceeds go to the AC Conservation and Development Fund.
