Introduction

Eileen wrote the diaries in hard backed exercise books and there are 26 diaries starting in 1932 and finishing in 1959.

Each of the 26 diaries may be viewed by following the links from the contents page.

Within these web pages links are underlined and will turn red if the mouse is hovered over them. For each transcribed volume there is a list of dates which provide links to the entry for that date. Most other links within the transcriptions are links to scanned images of the diaries described below.

The Diaries have been transcribed into type script, for easy reading, avoiding ambiguity and to allow machine searching. The type script has been kept as close to the original form as possible. However there has been the odd correction of spelling to reduce ambiguity and ease reading.

If clarification is required as to exactly what was written in the diary, or to view maps/photographs, it is possible to view a scanned copy of the diary by following the links within the transcript. These links will take you to a scanned page close to the marked date but you may need to use the “previous” or “next” links at the top and bottom of each page to find the correct scanned page. It may also be necessary to zoom the image and or scroll it in order to read it. To return to the transcript you can use your brower’s back button.

The routes page lists a selection of the climbs described in the diaries, and it is possible to jump to the diary entry for that date. You may find it easiest to use your browser's text search to find the start of the climb.
