John Moss

Stephen Venables has written:

'John, – who I think was a Mancunian and went to the same school as Paul Nunn – was one of Britain's best exports to South Africa. He and his wife Lynn were always incredibly hospitable on my visits to Cape Town, where he lectured at the university. One spring morning 1991 John and Paul Fatti took me up Kloof Corner, en route for the classic Jacob's Ladder. John had a fairly substantial hangover from the
previous night's MCSA centenary dinner and I admired his stoicism in getting all the way up Table Mountain so early in the morning.'

Skip Novak has written:

Professor John Moss was my rock climbing partner during various stopovers on sailing trips to Cape Town for the last 22 years, and most recently since our family moved there in 2002. He would never fail to give me a call during the week to set us up for a weekend’s outing on Table Mountain sandstone.  John was a reference point for many international climbers visiting South Africa, and he and his wife Lynn were marvelous hosts.  John’s particular style of slide shows from his many sabbaticals from the UCT chemistry department were never to be missed.  We all wondered whether those academic sabbaticals abroad were really climbing trips in disguise.  His enthusiasm for a climb never waned through his 6th decade and was an inspiration to those of us nearing the wrong side of the big 60.
