The Alpine Club, the world’s first mountaineering club, was founded in 1857.  For over 150 years, members have been at the leading edge of worldwide mountaineering development and exploration.

With membership, experienced and aspiring alpinists benefit from a varied meets programme, regional lectures with notable guest speakers, reduced rates at many alpine huts, opportunity to apply for grants to support expeditions, significant discounts at many UK retailers, extensive networking contacts, access to the AC Library and maps - and more!

Inverse Mountaineering – exploring the caves of northern Thailand

Jo Campbell

Many of you will know Jo from the Summer Alpine meets, but you may not know that her real passion is for caving.  In 2009 she travelled to the north of Thailand on her first caving expedition with friends from the Shepton Mallet Caving Club.  Based in the tiny Hill Tribe village of Ban Mani Phruk in Nan Province, their main objective was a cave with a large undescended pitch.  The depth of the pitch was unknown, but rocks thrown down took more than 5 seconds to hit the floor.  This trip was the start of an obsession with the exploration of the caves in this area, which have turned out to be some of the deepest in Thailand.  Jo will describe the work that they have done over several years to explore and survey these caves, which has at times felt like mountaineering in reverse
