LIBRARY WORKSTATION
A dedicated computer workstation for library users has been installed at the Alpine Club. The aim is to bring together a wide range of digital resources which complement the books and periodicals on the surrounding shelves.
Maps
The A3 scanner connected to the workstation can be used to scan
sections of interest from the Club’s collection of Himalayan maps and
the workstation also holds 6,000 large-scale Russian maps of mountain
areas. Bring a memory stick and you can take away copies of your
areas of interest to study or print elsewhere. Wireless internet is
also available in the Library allowing use of your own laptop for
more general research.
The workstation also provides easy access to satellite and terrain mapping on Google Maps, 3D ‘flyby’ simulations on Google earth and a wide selection of other photos taken from space. These can be compared on-screen with the features shown on the Indian and Russian maps.
Journals
As well as maps, the workstation also provides access to the internet versions of the Alpine Journal (from 1969) and American Alpine Journal, plus the Library’s digital series of the Canadian Alpine Journal, which is not available on the internet. The full text of each journal can be searched and the AJ and CAJ browsed by volume.
Library Catalogue
The Library Catalogue is also available to users on-screen. This is already on the internet, but the version on the workstation has the advantage that you can turn round and ask to see the books themselves. |
