STEVE SUSTAD : One of the world’s most outstanding yet elusive climbers Steve has partnered the likes of Doug Scott and Don Whillans as well as our new President. He has climbed routes on Broad Peak, Shivling, Changabang, Taweche, Cerro Kishtwar and many others. But he has only ever been persuaded to talk about his amazing experiences on one or two occasions.
We are indeed fortunate as he has agreed to do his first ever after dinner speech at the Welsh Alpine Club meet. He'll be talking about his attempt to solo the huge South Face of Aconcagua in Argentina. He was caught in a terrible storm and without realising, in the confusion of the
maelstrom, he dug a tiny snow hole which turned out to be in a serac. On the second day it collapsed sweeping away most of his gear including his sleeping bag and ice axes… The way down involved grade V ice climbing which, without axes, Steve found acutely memorable.

NB The Llanberis Mountain Film Festival is from Fri 18th - Sun 20th March 2011. See details

17/18th July - 150th Anniversary of the first ascent of the Gouter Ridge on Mont Blanc
A group of AC members plan to follow the route of the first ascent of the 'normal' route up Mont Blanc. Following the climb there will be a barbecue at Bionassay on Saturday.
A second group of guides, clients and journalists plan to make a similar ascent dressed in period costume.
A third group, including Francoise Call, intend to climb the Voie des Papes from Courmayeur, hopefully meeting near the summit.

One of the objectives behind this event is to highlight the various problems with the "voie normale". For example; 31 people died
in the last ten years on the section between the Tete Rousse and the Gouter huts alone, chronic overcrowding in the Gouter hut and the use
of the Vallot hut as a refuse tip. This is why the press is involved.  However the main objective remains to have a couple of fun
days out, while showing respect for those founding members of the AC 150 years ago.
Contact Gus Morton for more information.

27th August to 10th September.  Joint AC/ ABMSAC /CC/FRCC Dolomites Meet
Camping Dolomiti, Cortina.
The Dolomites Meet will be returning to Cortina in 2011 partly because the 2010 Meet was cut short owing to bad weather and partly because the Dolomiti campsite is an excellent base..   The Cortina area has a huge amount to offer both in terms of the volume and variety of the rock climbing not to mention the vie ferrate and scenic high level walking. It is also well positioned for access to nearby areas in case anyone feels they've 'climbed out' the immediate Cortina area. Transport links from Treviso airport are also quite good. The Dolomiti Campsite is to the south of Cortina, sign posted from the main road with a local bus service as well. It is the nicest of the three campsites grouped outside Cortina with flat grassy pitches, excellent showers, inclusive hot water and laundry facilities, a small shop, a pleasant bar, access to covered areas and superb views.
