Cold Ice

La Grave

This is the fourth January continental ice meet!  After Cogne, Chamonix and Gavarnie, this year we are at La Grave. In addition to first class ice climbing there are also great mountaineering and hors piste skiing possibilities. Accommodation is in a gite that provides evening meals. You are most welcome even if you don't have a partner.

12 - 26 July, but flexible… Gran Paradiso At this time we are well clear of the crowds, the flowers are at their best, the boulder fields at least partially snow covered. The south-east aspect faces and ridges are open but anyone wanting snow-ice climbes should be able to find them in condition. Base at Rifigio Pontese in the Vallone di Piantinetto, within an hour of the roadhead. It is surrounded by peaks that would attract attention in the Chamonix Valley with a range of routes from scrambles to outer limit lines on superb granite with accessible classics in between. (see Rock Paradise, M Oviglia). There are sport routes and trad rock climbs within 30 minutes of the hut. There are bivouac huts in adjacent valleys along the line of the Alta Via Canavese with links westwards to the Gran Paradiso itself. The Rifugio is warm, welcoming, and provides gourmet food. There is a cable box for baggage. There are a few two person rooms, but most beds are in the dormitory.  Programme is flexible as ever, as are the dates for participation There is plenty to be done in the area as well as in the Vallone di Piantonetto itself. The ‘Tour of the Gran Paradiso’ is a much more demanding (and rewarding) trip than the Mont Blanc equivalent. There are several hostel type main valley bases and a couple of CAI huts for those looking at the bigger picture. The Orco valley rock climbs are bolted – and need to be.

Open also to Fell and Rock; CC and ABMSAC

Access: Ryan Air to Turin and public transport is cheap and practicable to Rossone in the Orco valley. It is a (very) long walk , but a taxi can be arranged.Road access via the val D’Aosta looks (and is) indirect but in practice not horrendously so. Costs: in 2007 full board at the Rifugio was €uro 45 per day. The national park restrictions on fixed camping apply.

Kenya What about 3 weeks climbing on Mount Kenya?  As well as routes on Batian & Nelion there is plenty of good climbing on the lower, satellite peaks, and the south side of the mountain is in summer- alpine condition over Xmas and New year.

July

Norway

Lyngen -2 weeks

Romsdal -1 week

On offer is a mix of 'scottish' style hill walking, and more serious peaks on which a 'classic alpine' approach would be most suitable up to some of the largest big walls in Europe. There is now a budget operator between Stansted and Oslo (Norwegian Air) and SAS prices are competitive. Taking your own car would be more time consuming with a 24 hour ferry ride from Newcastle to Bergen followed by a one day drive to Romsdal, or a multi-day epic to Lyngen.
