The funeral will take place on Monday April 8th at 10am, at the Markeaton Crematorium, Derby, and afterwards at the Mackworth Hotel. The address for the crematorium is: Markeaton Crematorium, Markeaton Lane, Derby. DE22 4NH. The Mackworth hotel is just half a mile away on the A52.
There will be a memorial service later in the year in Hastings, NZ. |

Dick was found dead at his home in Port Townsend, Washington, USA on Monday 25th February. He died as a result of a gastro-intestinal haemorrhage: a relatively quick and painfree end according to the doctor. Tribute from Peter Rowat. |

Aspirant member. We have been told that on Sunday the 13th January Jack Wooding was climbing on Coire An T-Sneachda when he slipped and fell a significant distance. He was airlifted to Inverness hospital and then moved to Aberdeen hospital where he passed away at about 2.20pm on 14th January with his family at his bedside. See report.and Daily Mail Report

Mike Westmacott, a member of the 1953 Everest expedition and stalwart of the Alpine Club died on 20 June. Mike was president of the AC from 1993 to 1995 and performed a great service to mountaineering through his development of the Himalayan Index, a computer database listing 2,500 peaks and their climbing history.

Peter Fleming died 17 June.
Peter was one of the few members to have climbed all 4000m peaks in the Alps.
Many were done with Les Swindin.
Peter was co-author with Les for the Valais Alps East guidebook.
He was a life member of the Lake District Nat Park volunteer service.
A very active member of the Lakes Mine Rescue team and a long term member of FRCC. |

Harish Kapadia writes:" Nawang Gombu, the legendary Sherpa, passed away today (24th April) morning at 8.45 am at Darjeeling, after brief illness. He was 80 years.
Gombu was one of two Tiger Badge holder alive today. He was the first person to climb Everest twice, in 1960s. He also made the second ascent of Nanda Devi. He was the Director of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Darjeeling and has trained hundreds on Indian Mountaineers in last 5 decades. He conducted many rock climbing courses, specially in hills near Mumbai.
Gombu was Hon. Member of the Alpine Club, London, the American Alpine Club, US, the Himalayan Club, Mumbai and many other leading institutions the world over.

Our honorary member Col Balwant Sandhu died on 10th December. He had been in a coma for 10 days in the Research and Referral Army Hospital in New Delha hospital, following being hit by a speeding car near to the Indian Mountaineering Federation.
Balwant wasa past President of the Himalayan Club.
He and Chris Bonington co-led the Changabang ‘74 1st ascent with Doug, Haston, Boysen et al. He later ran the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. When it is known if there is to be a memorial service members will be informed. See Doug Scott's obituary to him on the UIAA site. |
