ABOUT THE EVENT Safe ski mountaineering is the result of numerous decisions, both during planning and in the field. This symposium will address many of the decisions that ski mountaineers face, from what to wear, how to train and where to go, to what to do in an emergency. Lectures will be given by experts on the key subjects, and in the afternoon a series of discussion forums will cover Equipment and Destinations. In the evening there is also a dinner, followed by a talk.
Booking details are here.
Lectures will be given in the main lecture theatre. The two sets of Panel Discussions will be run in parallel, one in the main theatre and one in a second theatre.
n.b. this programme is provisional and may change without notice
Ski Mountaineering Equipment Display: Items will be available to view and discuss. Attendees will be asked when tickets are issued if there is any equipment that they would like to examine: we will try to get hold of it! Gear Mart: Have you got any gear that you would like to sell? You will have the chance to sell it at the symposium. Only good, serviceable kit - no jumble please! Expert Question Panel: Have you got a question that you would like an expert to answer? We will be asking attendees for any questions they may have before the event and have the answers posted on the day. Significant questions will be brought up during the 'Questions to Expert Panel' in the afternoon. Favourite Destinations: Have you found somewhere really special to ski mountaineer that you would recommend to others? Or somewhere that's off the beaten track? We will be inviting attendees to share their knowledge and a few slides at the end of the day. Evening Meal and Lecture: After the symposium a dinner has been organised to end the day. This will be followed by Chic Scott's lecture 'Powder Paradise, Backcountry Skiing in Western Canada' in which he will cover all aspects of back-country skiing in the Rockies, Columbia Ranges and finish with a ski ascent of Mount Logan. This lecture will be open to all symposium attendees, whether or not you attend the meal. As the author of 5 books, including the definitive guides to nordic and back-country skiing in western Canada and a history of Canadian mountaineering, Chic's talk promises to be both inspiring and informative.
Tickets for this event are open to members and non-members of the Eagle Ski Club, Alpine Ski Club and Alpine Club. Since numbers are limited, tickets will be issued on a first-come first-served basis. The first 115 applications received with payment will be issued tickets.
The price, which includes the symposium, morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea is £46 for ESC, ASC and AC members and £50 for non-members. The evening dinner, which is followed by Chic Scott's lecture, is £24 for both members and non-members.
