My sincere condolences to John's family. I never met him, but John was famously on the first ascent of Vandal (HVS) on Pillar Rock in 1959 with Geoff Oliver and Len Willis (though I am sure he was famous for a lot of other stuff too), and I have pestered him with numerous phone calls over the last few years trying to pin down details of that day over half a century ago. John was amazingly good humoured about it all and very kindly went over and over what I had written until he felt I had got it down as accurately as it was ever likely to be: I am indebted to him for his patience.
Rest in peace John, Stephen Reid
